Evangel Writer's Guidelines

Writing for the Church of God Evangel

The purpose of the Evangel is to publish inspirational and informative articles highlighting the mission, doctrine, and ministry of the Church of God (Cleveland, TN) and helping readers to live as Pentecostal Christians.

We assign most articles. However, we usually publish two to three unsolicited articles per issue, equaling about 30 per year.

What types of articles will we consider?

  • Evangelistic: Aimed directly at non-Christian readers, but not preachy. The true story of how someone came to Christ is our favorite approach. 400 to 500 words
  • Personality feature: Articles about outstanding Christians, particularly Church of God laity and ministers. Highlight a person's ministry, overcoming a difficulty, special talent, answered prayer, unusual contribution—whatever makes that person stand out. Photos requested. 600 to 1,300 words
  • First-person article: An inspiring or unusual happening in your or another Christian's life—divine guidance, healing, answer to prayer, interesting experience in ministry. 600 to 1,300 words
  • Current issues: Well-researched articles presenting a Christian perspective on contemporary events. 1,100 to 1,300 words
  • Devotional articles: Articles on prayer, Bible reading, fasting, stewardship, faith, overcoming temptation, life in the Spirit. 500 to 600 words
  • Seasonal material: Fresh perspectives on New Year's Day, Easter, Pentecost, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. 500 to 600 words
  • Church of God news: Because of the frequency of certain church events, such as anniversaries and building dedications, the Evangel is unable to use many such stories. If the event is unusual in some special manner, we may be interested in it. If you wish to inquire about the newsworthiness of an event, contact us. Because the church experiences a large number of deaths of ministers each year, we are unable to print eulogies.
